Our Makers
The Art of Craftsmanship: Bone Inlay, Toleware & Ceramics
At the heart of our collections lies an unwavering dedication to craftsmanship, artistry, and the beauty of slow, meticulous production. Each piece we create is not merely an object but a testament to heritage, skill, and the human touch. From the moment Sophie’s ideas take shape as rough sketches to the final, hand-polished finish, every item tells a unique story—one woven through time-honoured techniques passed down through generations.
Our commitment to small production runs ensures that every creation is as individual as the hands that craft it. In a world increasingly driven by speed and uniformity, we remain steadfast in our belief that true artistry takes time, care, and passion.
Bone Inlay
In Sambhal, a region of India renowned for its exquisite horn, bone, and metal craftsmanship, our bone inlay pieces are meticulously handcrafted in a family-run workshop that has refined this intricate art over decades. This craft is not a product of mass production but of patience, precision, and deep-rooted skill. The journey begins with sustainably sourced mango wood, forming the foundation of each piece. Slivers of buffalo bone, a by-product of the meat industry, are carefully cut into delicate, uniform fragments and dyed in rich, organic hues. These tiny pieces are then arranged by hand, one by one, into intricate, mesmerizing patterns. Much like an elaborate mosaic, the design emerges slowly, layer by layer, before being meticulously smoothed and hand-polished to perfection. No two pieces are ever identical—the subtle variations in tone and texture make each one a singular work of art. This is sustainability in its truest form: transforming what would otherwise be discarded into something truly beautiful and enduring.
Toleware
From the bustling ironwork hub of Moradabad, our toleware is born from a combination of expert metalwork and the delicate precision of hand-painted artistry. We collaborate with small, specialized workshops, where artisans use traditional techniques to cut, shape, and mould flat sheets of iron into sculpted forms—entirely by hand. Once shaped, the metal is coated with a flawless base of colour, creating a perfect canvas for the intricate designs to come. With extraordinary precision, master craftsmen apply intricate hand-painted details, bringing each piece to life with patterns designed by Sophie.
Ceramics
Our newest venture is Tooka’s ceramic range, crafted in a family-run factory established over 50 years ago by a visionary artisan. Now helmed by his two sons, this factory is a rare find in a world where traditional ceramic-making skills have largely faded away. Here, time-honoured techniques have been preserved, allowing for the creation of truly handmade ceramics that exude warmth, character, and authenticity. With a dedicated team of 250 artisans, the factory maintains an extraordinary atmosphere of calm and focus. Each artist is entirely devoted to their craft, perfecting every stage of the process—from the initial design and moulding through to the intricate hand painting and glazing. The result is ceramics of quality, imbued with the human touch that no machine can replicate. We are incredibly excited to share this exquisite new collection with you soon.
Kettles & Dog Bowls
Jain in Jaipur has a wonderful shop selling painted homeware – either in aluminium of steel. I stumbled across this treasure trove 8 years ago and forged a great friendship with Jain. She has a team of highly skilled artists with the steadiest hands who can paint the most intricate of patterns onto any objects. Sophie now sends her designs to them and they transform her sketches into wonderful pieces of art.
